FREESTYLE made history as the first British movie set in the world of basketball. It was released in UK cinemas before being shown on BBC television and Sky. FREESTYLE was distributed internationally and reached audiences in France, Australia and New Zealand, Africa, the Middle East and North America. Most of the cast in FREESTYLE had never acted before and achieved their role following open calls in London, Birmingham and Manchester. Notable debuts include Lucy Konadu in the lead role of Lucy, and the award-winning actor and writer Arinze Kene, All of the assistant directors were women and the music supervisor was the celebrated musician, entrepreneur and actor, Bashy who also had an early screen role in Freestyle before going on to star in ON THE NIGHT OF, TOP BOY and BLACK CAKE who went on to star in achieved his screen debut on FREESTYLE and Alfie Alan (GAME OF THRONES) had one of his very early screen roles in the film. FREESTYLE was developed and financed by BBC Film and Film London as part of Film London’s Microwave scheme.
